The original subject matter of my photographs -- land, sky, trees, glaciers -- serves as my initial inspiration. I then shape the image on my computer as I once did in the darkroom to bring out what I felt at the time of exposure. As with other creative processes, the resultant work is not a replication of the original subject. The final photograph is an interpretation, an abstraction which also reflects the photographer and his feelings at the time of exposure. My photography teacher in the late 1960s, Minor White, used to say that the "photograph is a mirror or the photographer.”

I have chosen to work in black and white as well as in infrared black and white. The final prints made with these processes are very different from the original subject matter and allow me to interpret and share the feelings I have being in a place. My personal goal is to be in communion with the land. For me photographing the landscape of Iceland is like experiencing the birth of our planet where natural forces are still at work creating and shaping the land. I feel that remarkable creative energy here in Iceland and strive to express it through my photographs. - Ron Rosenstock

"This is by far the most incredible book that Ron Rosenstock has ever published.  The subject matter is beyond breathtaking, majestic and powerful.  But Ron's view, the angles, the light, even the skill he has with infrared photography is beyond anything you could see if you were standing there next to him.  He just keeps getting better and better."  - Karen C., Massachusetts

"Ron Rosenstock’s fifth, and latest, book of photographs - “Inspirations: Images of Iceland” reasserts his skill as a master printer of evocative and luminous photographs.  A recent convert to digital imagery, Ron shows in his latest book, the ease of his transition.  His digital BWs and infrared photos of Iceland possess the same wide spectrum of muted, subtle tones he is known for in the silver prints previously captured with his 8 x 10 view camera.

Known as a land of ice and fire, Iceland’s topography is stark and diverse, with a light that seems to emanate from within.  In a land subject to violent forces of nature, Ron’s quiet, yet powerful, vision is able to capture the country’s pristine beauty.  Many of his images of snow patterns, broken ice, surf, and lava, tend to create abstract patterns that draw the viewer in. And, throughout the book, Ron evocatively captures the softness of waterfalls and swirling tides, as well as the power of lava formations and sea stacks. Even if you have been to Iceland, one is mysteriously touched by the haunting landscape.  And, if, like me, you haven’t been there – his captivating photographs make you long to visit this vast, unspoiled country." - Sarah C., New York
