Spring 2011
A New Itinerary and a New Destination

ICELAND:
The year began with a scouting trip to Iceland. My purpose was to
determine if going to Iceland in the middle of winter would produce
wonderful images that could not be made at any other time of the year.
My more personal goal was to photograph the northern lights.
The northern lights, or aurora borealis, are most likely seen during
a new moon and on a clear night. Knowing that we had no control over
the weather, I was hopeful that our small band of photographers would
have at least one clear night when the aurora borealis was on display.
The weather gods were with us, and my scouting group was treated to
a memorable display of the northern lights. In addition, we visited
many amazing locations that reveal the beauty of winter in Iceland.
Although daylight only lasts from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., we made the
most of the incredible photographic opportunities Iceland in winter
offers.
An advantage to traveling to Iceland in January is that it is off-season,
a time when airfare and hotel rates are significantly reduced. If
you love dramatic landscapes, unusual lighting situations, and plenty
of abstract forms in nature, please consider joining me in Iceland
from January 21-28, 2012.

SANTORINI,
GREECE: This year I added a new destination, the Greek
island of Santorini, a spectacular location in the Aegean Sea.
Santorini is what is left of a much larger landmass destroyed in a
volcanic eruption 3,600 ago at the height of the Minoan civilization.
Many of the island's picturesque towns are located on the west side
of the island where you'll find the caldera view. The caldera is approximately
eight by five miles. There is a popular theory that it was once the
lost civilization of Atlantis. Our hotel is right on the top of the
caldera. The views from the hotel are not to be missed. We look out
on smaller volcanic islands in the Aegean. I was able to make a series
of photographs from the balcony in my room, all different because
of the changing lighting conditions.
Every day we travel on the group bus to a different part of the island,
photographing castles, churches, land and seascapes, and quaint towns
that only have foot traffic.
Some of my favorite photographs from the trip are high-key images.
The island offers endless possibilities to photograph white-on-white
churches that dot the cliffside towns. Although I've just returned,
I'm looking forward to my next Santorini photo tour, October 1, 2012.

Comments from Tour Participants
“Joyce and I both felt that it [trip to Italy] was a trip-of-a-lifetime.
The group was small enough so that we became friendly with everyone,
and it was not too unwieldy in getting around. The places we stayed
were as nice as you could ever hope for. The photographs that we were
able to take make me look as though I am a pro. The quaint little
villages that we visited in Tuscany have left a lasting impression
on us, and the special vineyards and little churches just made the
whole trip so special. The places we ate, and the food, both were
first-rate. The extra effort that you made was greatly appreciated."
— L. Dobens
“Ron, you provided ample opportunities to capture the essence
of the landscape. However, I cherish most your times of sharing on
creating your images, and the suggestions and comments you gave me
regarding my own photographs. I am often recalling something you said
or an image comes to mind as I contemplate some scene. I expect to
see long-term results from my time with you."
—D. Lusk
“My recent experience in Morocco was enriched by the kindness
and friendliness of its' people. Never did I feel any concern about
being an American in a Muslim country. I was struck by how profound,
personal, respectful, and diverse their religious connections are
and felt privileged that I could meet and be in an Islamic community
that is far different from what is portrayed in the news media. Along
the way I met and spoke to many Israeli tourists who see Morocco as
a "must visit" place to go."
